What do I need to consider before purchasing a spa?
At Spring Dance Hot Tubs, we encourage our customers to try out different models with a "wet test." While trying out a spa, consider the following:
- Do the seats provide lumbar support?
- Are the jets aligned to massage muscle tissue?
- How convenient are the controls?
- How loud are the jets?
- Does the water reach shoulder level?
How much should I spend on a spa?
Quality spas are available in a wide range of prices. Just like cars, spa prices reflect different features and options, the materials from which the spa is made, and the quality of the engineering of the spa.
Hot Spring and
Sundance Spas are the two top brands in the industry because they feature the most innovative and up-to-date features, are made from the most energy efficient materials available and are engineered in ISO 9001 awarded factories. (ISO 9001 is the highest international standard for design and manufacturing excellence).
With those three expectations met, you might think these brands come with a lofty price tag. In fact,
Hot Spring and
Sundance Spas offer a wide range of products at different price levels to meet every consumer's needs!
How expensive is it to operate a spa?
The main cost of operating a spa is heating the water. If you have a fully-foam insulated spa with an insulated, locking cover, the average daily cost is only about $1.00 to run your hot tub.
Sundance and Hot Spring Spas have important "GREEN" initiatives for all their hot tub models. They are leaders in the industry when it comes to offering energy efficient hot tubs. Learn more about our energy efficient tubs on our energy page.
What are the electrical requirements for a hot tub?
Most of our tubs require a 220v electrical hook-up, however we DO have a few models that run on a dedicated, 115v outlet!

Does the number of jets present in a tub determine the quality of the tub?
The short answer is NO- the number of jets has no affect on the quality of the tub.
The longer answer is that delivering the best massage in the world has
very little to do with the number of jets and a lot more to do with the proper
placement of jets. This is where the engineering comes into play. Jet orifices, the plumbing and the pumps all factor into the delivery of a great hydro-massage.
Think of it like acupuncture- a SINGLE, properly placed filiform can remove pain, relieve stress and promote healing. You could put 200 filiform needles in the WRONG place and get nothing but pain without any benefit.
All of our jets are designed by and placed into the spa by a team of experts from both the medical massage fields and hydrotherapy fields.
We strongly recommend that you try out the hot tub before you make your purchase. Just from sitting in the tub, you will be able to tell if a manufacture chose a particular number of jets just to look flashy, or if the jet placement was done for some great engineering purpose.
What do I need to know about pump horsepower?
There are two different types of horsepower: Break Down Torque and Continuous Duty.
- Break Down Torque is the surge of horsepower that all electric motors experience for a split second when the motor starts up.
- Continuous Duty is what you should be concerned with, as that is what you will be experiencing while you are enjoying your hot tub.
Other engineering factors, such as the size of the plumbing, filtration and jet orifices, all configure into the horsepower equation.
A pump with smaller horsepower in a spa that is engineered appropriately can deliver
more power and
more of a massage than a bigger pump in a tub that has been engineered poorly. Great engineering will both feel better
and save you money!
How much room will I need for my spa?
You will need the obtain dimensions of the hot tub you are purchasing PLUS whatever distance your township requires that you create around your tub. (See the question: What type of base should I use for more info on this.) You will also need to account for any accessories that you might be getting (cover lifters, umbrellas, steps, etc…).
Please note that cover lifters need anywhere from 9 to 24 inches of additional room on one side of the tub for clearance to open your cover completely. The side of the tub that your cover will need to open on is sometimes your choice, but sometimes the design of the tub determines which side it has to be on. Contact your sales representative to find out how your cover is going to open!
What type of base does my new hot tub need to sit on?
The base that your tub will rest upon must be ready when we arrive with your tub. It can be almost any hard, level surface that can support an evenly distributed amount of weight across it's structure.
Bases that work well include: concrete pads poured 4 to 6 inches thick, pavers, railroad ties, wood decks and pea gravel pads (poured 4 inches or thicker). Crushed stone bases and architectural stone bases also work, as well.*
We carry a line of Spa Pads that are designed specifically for the purpose of a hot tub base and are easily installed. They also have the added benefit of being portable in case you decide to move the location of your tub at a later date. They are modular so they can be purchased in kits for any size tub!
Please keep in mind that when dealing with township inspectors, interpretation of code can and will often vary. They may require you to have additional materials in between your base and your tub. If you plan to have an inspection at the end of your project, it is always best to check with them first, before beginning work on your base.
We offer a free service of pre-site inspections to discuss the details of your existing base or your future base project, as well as to determine the delivery path and any gateways that will have to be navigated through at the time of your delivery. This isn’t always needed, as many sites are wide open and level, but in the case that you may need an expert opinion on placement or other details for your project, it only takes a few minutes and we provide this service to you for free. Schedule a Site Check today!
*Depending on how large of a spa you are purchasing, a crushed stone base may not be recommended by the manufacture. Discuss the best base with your sales representative to be sure!
I live in Philadelphia. Can you put my spa on my roof?
Absolutely! We quite often deliver spas to sites that need to be accessed by a crane. Details will need to be discussed with your salesperson, and we will want to do a physical site check, but crane deliveries are NOT difficult, and surprisingly, are inexpensive!

We recommended that you Drain and Clean your spa 3 or 4 times a year, depending on how much you use it and how well the water is maintained.
